Bishop Holds Spanish Mass at Ste. Anne’s

Bishop John Doerfler of the Diocese of Marquette celebrated Mass in Spanish Thursday, July 16, at Ste. Anne’s Church. Brother Jim Boynton said it was the first time a bishop has celebrated the service at Ste. Anne’s in more than 20 years.

“It is a joy being able to connect with people from a different culture,” said Bishop Doerfler, who met Br. Boynton in St. Ignace in 2014, and was invited to hold a mass at the church this summer. He studied Spanish in Mexico.

“My Spanish is not stellar, but adequate,” he said, adding that while service is the same in Spanish, “preaching is more challenging,” because Spanish is his second language.

While on the Island, Bishop Doerfler also preached to a gathering at Grand Hotel.

“The bishop comes for the top of society and the bottom of society,” said Br. Boynton, adding, “That’s what the Catholic Church is supposed to do.”

Bishop Doerfler mingled with attendees at the Island employee dinner in the church basement before the Mass.

The Spanish-speaking community on the Island, made up mostly of summer workers from Mexico, meets Wednesdays at 8 p.m. for Bible study at the church.
