William France

William France William France William R. France, of Cheboygan, enjoyed a career with Michigan State Police, and served as commander of the post at St. Ignace for a time, as well as chief of police on Mackinac Island from 1975 to 1976. Mr. France passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at Sunnyside Senior Living Center in Cadillac. He was 97.

He was born April 7, 1918, to William and Florence (nee Still) France in Cheboygan.

He married Hazel LaFrinere May 28, 1942, in Cheboygan. She died in 1999. He then married Marian Gauthier in 2001, and she died in 2013.

Mr. France was graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1936. He enlisted with the Michigan State Police in 1940. He had served at posts in Rockford, Reed City, East Lansing, and finally, in 1963, in St. Ignace, where he became sergeant and commander of the post. In 1971 his rank was reallocated to lieutenant. Throughout his career, Mr. France received six department citations for meritorious service. He retired in 1974, after more than 33 years of service. He then served as chief of police on Mackinac Island.

He was a member of St. Mary-St. Charles Catholic Church and the Cheboygan Eagles. Mr. France enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cards, fishing, having coffee with his friends, and camping on the family farm on the Black River, where he grew up.

He is survived by two daughters and their families, Cindy and Jim Bosscher of McBain and Michelle and Scott McNeil of Cheboygan; two daughtersin law, Jackie France and Cindy France; nine grandchildren and their families, Debbie and John Keefe, Christine Siwecki, Jamey and Jennifer France, Cheryl and Jason Schwieters, Melissa Lundy, Nicholas McNeil, Nicole Bosscher, Bethany and Scott Georgia, and Andy and Ashlee Bosscher, and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother and his family, Dale and Leeann France of Cheboygan, and one sister and her family, Carol Rocheleau, also of Cheboygan.

In addition to his parents and his first and second wives, Mr. France was preceded in death by two sons, William France III and David France; one brother, Orval France, and one sister, Pearl Hudson.

Services were Monday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary-St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan with Reverend Paul Megge officiating. Visitation was Sunday, July 19, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Nordman- Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan. Visitation was also Monday from 10 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Burial was at St. Francis Cemetery in Alverno.
