Armand and Sara Horn of St. Ignace welcomed a baby girl, Dessa Alice Horn, born Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace. She weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 20.5 inches in length. Dessa is the couple’s third child, and first daughter. They are also the parents of two boys, five-year-old James, and three-year-old Garrett.

She was born just hours short of her father’s birthday, who was also born in St. Ignace.

Dessa was born in the emergency room at the St. Ignace hospital. Mrs. Horn was due February 12, but began to go into labor February 7. She and her husband packed their bags, dropped their boys off with family, and prepared for a trip to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, when Mrs. Horn’s labor became intense, and the weather was bad for traveling, so they decided to stop at the St. Ignace hospital for advice on what to do. Mr. and Mrs. Horn credited the emergency room staff with excellent care and quick response to the emergency.

With the weather poor, even ambulance travel likely would have been difficult, Mrs. Horn said.

“If we tried to make it [to the Sault], I probably would’ve had the baby on the side of the road,” said Mrs. Horn.

Mother and baby were both healthy and were later transferred by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie for maternity care.

The St. Ignace hospital has no obstetrics or delivery facilities. Hospital administrator Karen Cheeseman said the hospital does not offer obstetrics services, but is able to assist in medical emergencies, as it did with the Horn family.

The family has a new business venture this season, as well, as Mr. and Mrs. Horn purchased the Sunset Motel at 786 US-2 near St. Ignace in January. They plan to welcome their first guests at the motel in April. The 15-room motel property, formerly owned by Jim and Annette Durm, also has three year-around rentals. Mr. Horn said he particularly looks forward to helping his guests plan their vacations in the local area. Mr. Horn will be involved in the daily operation of the business, while Mrs. Horn will continue to work for Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry.
