Captain George ‘Joseph’ Alward

George Alward George Alward Captain George C. “Joseph” Alward of Hessel went home to his heavenly father on Thursday, May 11, 2017, after a long and courageous bout with cancer.

He was born on December 1, 1941, to George and Frances (nee Hoban) Alward, and he grew up in St. Ignace. He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1960, lettering in football and track. George received a letter from Michigan State University to try out for football. He attended Ferris State University for one year.

Thereafter, George pursued his lifelong dream of becoming an ocean captain and sailed around the world. George began a sailing career with Arnold Transit Company, sailing from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island.

He led a very active life, teaching golf under Jim Flict and Jack Nicholas Schools. He also taught scuba diving, sailing, Nordic and alpine skiing. Additionally, he raced boats, formula cars, was an active skydiver, and an avid reader.

George was well known for his strong faith, passionately practicing with Jesus in mind, as he encouraged so many others to do. As Paul wrote, “George fought the good fight.” He received much fulfillment in writing spiritual messages, which may yet be published. George was ready, are you?

He is survived by a daughter, Heide Alward, her husband, Jim Hartung, and his granddaughter, Eva Hartung. He is also survived by his brother, Steve Alward, and his sister and her family, Marilyn and Richard Sigler; two nieces, Renee and Todd Aurand and Margaret and Corey Dunham; a nephew, Scott Alward; greatnephews, Erik and Austin Alward, and great-nieces Olivia and Ally Aurand.

In accordance with George’s wishes, no services will be held.

Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the EUP, 308 West 12th Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.

As submitted by the family of

George Alward.
