Powwow Highlights Rendezvous at the Straits in St. Ignace

A French voyager reenactment and traditional Native American powwow will highlight the 11th annual Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow, a family event celebrating the history of the St. Ignace area Saturday, August 26, and Sunday,

August 27. The event is held at the Father Marquette National Memorial on the western side of Straits State Park. Guests can visit French encampments, watch demonstrations, and visit vendors displaying authentic wares that recall the early days of European settlement at St. Ignace. There will also be Native American dancing and drumming ceremonies throughout the weekend. Food will be available.

The blessing of the grounds will take place Friday, August 25, at noon. The Grand Entrance will be at noon on both Saturday and Sunday. Rendezvous at the Straits is a family event and is alcohol free. Admission is $4 for elders and $5 for everyone else. Children ages 5 and under are admitted free.

A state recreation passport is required for parking in the state park during the event. The St. Ignace Events Committee, the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the Michilimackinac Historical Society, and Kewadin Casinos sponsor the powwow.
