Jerry ‘Berf’ Fenlon

Jerry Fenlon Jerry Fenlon Jerry “Berf” Michael Fenlon, 66, of St. Ignace, died suddenly Sunday, December 24, 2017, at his home.

He was born September 4, 1951, to Jack Raymond and Marion Jean (nee Smith) Fenlon in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mr. Fenlon grew up in Moran Township. He was graduated from LaSalle High School in 1969. After high school, Jerry went to Gail Institute (Airline School) and worked at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois.

He married Susan Sorenson September 11, 1971, and they moved back to St. Ignace to start their family. He went to work for Belonga Plumbing and Heating, where he obtained his master plumber’s license. He worked mostly on Mackinac Island, and he would ride his bicycle all over the Island carrying full lengths of pipe and all of his tools. People would stop what they were doing to watch the balancing act as he pedaled by. After 42 years of serving the communities’ plumbing needs, Mr. Fenlon retired in September 2013. Retirement allowed him to redirect his fulltime energies to continuing to help people and volunteer for community service projects. He was a hard worker, family members said, with a serving soul.

Mr. Fenlon was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Ignace, where he served on the church council. He also served on the Moran Township Recreation Board and on the Moran Township school board. He was head of the St. Ignace Car Show parking for more than 20 years.

Mr. Fenlon loved to fish and give them away. He always said the “best day fishing is when you don’t have to clean any when you get home.” He liked to hunt and go for rides on his four-wheeler. He and his twin sister, Judy, were adrenaline junkies and they liked to push the limits, family members recall. He played softball when he was younger, and could hit a softball out of the park. He performed in several plays with the Playcrafters in St. Ignace. Most of all, he loved to play with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; a son and his family, Michael Neil Fenlon and Rachel Trobridge of Zeeland; a daughter and her family, Mandy Sue and Matthew Bowlby of St. Ignace, and three grandchildren, Jace, Mirra, and Mckale. He is also survived by his twin sister and her family, Judy Fenlon and Tom Harrington of St. Ignace, two other sisters and their families, Barbara and Tom Alkire and Kim and Mike Wartella, also of St. Ignace; two sisters-in-law and their families, Judith Lynn Ryerse and Linda Lou and Mike Wilkins, both of St. Ignace, and two brothers in-law and their families, Gary and Monica Sorenson of St. Ignace and Steven and Carol Sorenson of Holland, Michigan.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fenlon was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-inlaw, Neil and Esther Sorenson.

Services were held Saturday, December 30, at 2 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Ignace with Pastor David Tielbar officiating. Visitation was from 11 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Fenlon family.

R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
