Starting with a blast of rifles at Fort Mackinac at 9 a.m., runners and walkers will embark on a winding journey to Arch Rock and Fort Holmes, ending at the Scout Barracks.

The course promises to be difficult, as runners and walkers will have to scale many of the Island’s steep slopes. The race will begin inside the walls of Fort Mackinac, and participants will head through the North Sally Port gates to exit the fort and continue up to Arch Rock. Runner and walkers will pass the cemeteries on their way to Fort Holmes, where the first runners will be greeted by a musket salute from historic interpreters. After circling Fort Holmes to enjoy the sweeping views of Lake Huron, the participants will head down the hill to the Governor’s Summer Residence. The race ends on the Parade Grounds inside Fort Mackinac.

Aid stations and restrooms will be available along the course.

Those participating in the race can pick up their packets before the race from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Scout Barracks behind Fort Mackinac, at the intersection of Huron and Garrison Roads. The race costs $40 for those who register on or before Tuesday, May 1, and $45 for those who register after May 1.

Race participants can use their bib to enter the fort for free, and their family members will receive a discount.

The race is being sponsored by Gault Race Management. For more information, or to register for the event, visit www.runmackinac.com or call (810) 487- 0954.
