International Lighthouse Conference Is May 20-22

The history of lighthouses from around the world will be celebrated at the International Lighthouse Conference at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island Sunday, May 20, through Tuesday, May 22.

The conference will feature more than 20 presentations and events, including advice from exhibitors who will be on hand to help attendees tackle lighthouse preservation projects. Wayne Wheeler will be the keynote speaker with his talk “The History of Lighthouses: from Bonfires to Satellites.” Mackinac State Historic Parks Deputy Director Steve Brisson will give a talk on the history of Mackinac Island, and Grand Hotel Historian Bob Tagats will provide a history of Grand Hotel.

Attendees of the conference will also be treated to a 2.5 hour-long tour of local lighthouses aboard a Shepler’s Ferry and narrated by Terry Pepper, president of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association. Other highlights will include a performance of Storm, a Great Lakes shipwreck concert.
