Michael ‘Iggy’ Bradley

Michael Bradley Michael Bradley Michael “Iggy” Bradley 65 of Mackinac Island passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on May 5, 2018 at McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan from complications of cancer that he fought fiercely, honorably and bravely to the end.

Mike was born in Manistique, Michigan on October 14, 1954 to Elmer and Joan (nee Tennyson) Bradley who preceded him in death. He attended school at the Mackinac Island Public School where he graduated in 1972.

On an Island known for its characters, Mike was near the top of that special breed. Mike’s straightforward and pragmatic approach to life, work and play was rarely refuted but universally loved. His colloquialisms commonly known as “Iggyisms” were known Island wide. Always with a funny quip or remark to everyday situations, his Iggy-isms were on par with Yogi Berra for irony and wit.

He worked for the City in the early 1970s before going to work for Straits Construction as painter until the mid-80’s when he became the Mackinac Island Public School Janitor until he retired. As Janitor, he befriended a myriad of students who engaged him daily for wit and life advice.

An avid volunteer and epicurean enthusiast, Mike was seen Island wide cooking at fundraisers and community gatherings. He was always happy to do the behind-thescenes work and avoided the limelight. Mike’s other hobbies included rare collections, coin-collecting, gardening and fire-arms. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan and wasn’t afraid to let those around him know it.

Mike joined the Fire Department in 1987 and held every rank in the department, including Chief from 2011 to 2017. He was a mainstay at the MIFD and was unrivaled in his efforts and responses, often staying at the scene of a fire long after the extinguishment to clean up and put gear back on the trucks.

While Mike had a son he met later in life and a girl he raised as his daughter, he didn’t have the traditional nuclear family of his own, however Mike was rich with the family’s around him. He had a family at the Fire Department, a family at the Public School, a family at the Mustang Lounge, and a family amongst the folks he saw on his daily rounds. To call him a well-loved friend and brother on Mackinac Island would be an understatement.

He is survived by son Greg and Kara Myers, three grandchildren Blake, Owen, and Katherine; a daughter Kate (nee Thomson) and Steven Thompson and grandchildren Sam and Zach. Two brothers and a sister and their families; Dennis and Jackie (nee Bodwin) Bradley of Mackinac Island, Jim and Laurie (nee Cowell) of Green Bay, WI, and Deborah Bradley and Mike Posten of Sault Ste. Marie. Nephews Dennis Jr and Carrie Bradley, David and Cassie Bradley, Jim Jr. and Heidi Bradley, Mike Bradley and special friend Melissa Christensen and niece Doris Willemsen. Great nephew and nieces Hannah, Emma, Taylor, and Reece, Thomas, Kayleen, Alyssa, Annette, Zoey, Brian, Bryce, Breanna, Logan and great-great nephew Dakota.

Mike requested no funeral service. The MIFD will escort Mike’s ashes to his home on Saturday, May 12, at 8 a.m. from town. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mackinac Island Community Foundation Cancer Fund or the Mackinac Island Public School Scholarship Fund.
