A sailboat found on the west breakwall Monday, June 25, at 5:52 a.m. It had likely broke from its rigging sometime during the night and was noticed in the morning hours. Nobody was aboard a sailboat that drifted into the west breakwater Monday, June 25, but the boat sustained heavy damage and has been towed to Mackinaw City. Area rescue units responded at 5:52 a.m. to a 911-dispatch call when passersby reported the sailboat crashing into the rocks and sinking.

Mackinac Marine Rescue, Station St. Ignace Coast Guard, and Mackinac Island police responded to the call. After assessing the situation and finding no one on board or in the immediate area at around 7:45 a.m., rescue teams searched for the owner of the sailboat to check on their wellbeing and inform them of the heavily damaged boat. With the owner’s safety assured, recovery of the sailboat began.

“When a boat does hit rocks like that, it is not unusual to have water and interior damage,” said United States Coast Guard St. Ignace Officer in-Charge Andrew Babione.

The owner of the vessel is an employee here, said Sam Barnwell, the Mackinac Marine Rescue officer-incharge.

The sailboat had dragged its anchor and blew into the breakwall. Extensive damage was sustained to the vessel, which was flooded to the waterline. The Coast Guard Pollution Control team was dispatched to ensure no harmful materials where left in the lake to pollute the area.

McKay Bay Towing and Salvage Company of Cedarville and Paaseno Marine Services of Cheboygan assisted in the recovery of the sinking vessel to the Mackinac City Marina.

This is the third boat found at a breakwall in the last three years.

Mackinac Marine Rescue crew on the call were Mr. Barnwell, Stephanie McGreevy, Dan Wightman, and Allen Burt.
