The Mackinac Island community welcomed 66 students back school Tuesday, September 4, at the annual community picnic and celebration. For the first time in many years, the cookout was held indoors because of rain that morning, which eventually cleared to sunny skies.

Students, teachers, parents, residents, and workers all gathered in the small gymnasium, which doubles as the cafeteria, to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon, and a variety of salads.

Seven students are expected to enroll in preschool, and many also attended the picnic with their parents and families. Preschool orientation is Monday, September 10, at 5:30 p.m.

Gretchen Colman from the Children’s Riding Academy also brought Henry the pony to greet the students as they returned to their academic studies. Henry wore a sign that said, “Henry the Pony says, ‘School is cool!’” Students were happy to greet the familiar Island equine.
