The Eight Mile Road Race around Mackinac Island will be Saturday, September 9, and runners and walkers will take off from Mission Point Resort at 9:30 a.m. Participants will head west through downtown, then circle the Island clockwise before ending on the lakefront trail in front of the resort. About 2,000 participants are expected for the annual aroundthe Island foot race, which is now in its 48th year. The race is a fundraiser for the St. Ignace Kiwanis

Club, which provides volunteers to staff the finish line and three water stations throughout the course. The club also donates fruit to the participants.

Packet pick-up and late registration will be held at the Mission Point sound stage Friday, September 7, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on race day from 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

Mainland participants in the race should catch a ferry to the Island no later than 8 a.m.

Roller blades, pets, wagons, or other wheeled vehicles are not allowed. Joggers with baby strollers are strongly discouraged owing to the danger they pose to other runners.

Awards are given to the overall and master’s winners and the top three finishers in each age group.

Registration for the race now costs $55 and will cost $60 on race day. Registration for the children’s race is $15. Registration can be completed online at runmackinac.com. On race day, late entrants can also register in person at the Mission Point sound stage.
