Mary Duffina


Mary Duffina Mary Duffina Mary Gwendolyn Duffina, 89, of Inverness, Florida, and Mackinac Island, passed away quietly at her home in Inverness Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

She was born August 8, 1929, the eldest daughter of Philip G. Dufina and Elizabeth (nee Habermehl) Dufina on Mackinac Island.

She attended school on Mackinac Island and also in Alpena.

Mrs. Duffina loved Mackinac history and she authored two books, “The Voice of the Turtle” and “Historic Personalities of the Mackinac Region.” While on the Island she was a member of the Ste. Anne’s Church choir. She was an elder of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

She is survived by her children, Thomas Chambers of Mackinac Island, David and Cindy Summerfield of Iron Mountain, Sheryl and Rick Weaver of Inverness, and Kathryn and Richard Wieber, also of Inverness; six grandchildren, Chris and Stacy Summerfield, Chelsye Summerfield and Jesse Marrow, Lindsay and Scott Bauer, Joshua and Ashlee Simonetti, Alicia Simonetti, and Erika McCullough, and seven greatgrandchildren,

Luke, Parker, Gabriella and Brynlee Summerfield, Caleb and Piper Bauer, and Greyson Marrow. She is also survived by a sister, Frances Hayes of Inverness, and a brother, Dennis Dufina of Sarasota, Florida.

A daughter, Mary Suzanne Simonetti, died in 2013, and a sister, Lois Anne Dufina Morello, died in 2006.

A June 2019 service is planned on Mackinac Island.

Heinz Funeral Home and Cremation of Inverness assisted the family with arrangements.
