Island Voted One Of World’s Best By Condé Nast

Mackinac Island has been named one of the best islands in the United States through the 2018 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice awards, for which nearly one-half million readers rated their travel experiences.

Mackinac Island placed sixth in the top 10 Best Islands in the U.S. and was the only island in freshwater to be selected. The top U.S. honor went to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, followed by Amelia Island, Florida, Kiawah Island, South Carolina, Maui, Hawaii, Oahu, Hawaii, Mackinac Island, Nantucket, Massachusetts, Big Island, Hawaii, Kauia, Hawaii, and Key West, Florida.

“We are honored to be included among these top island destinations around the globe,” said Mackinac Island Tourism Executive Director Tim Hygh. “This is a big win for all of us in Pure Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes region. All of the other listed U.S. islands are surrounded by oceans so we’re proud to be recognized as the only freshwater destination.”

Serving as a tourist destination since the 1800s, many of Mackinac Island’s visitors return year after year, he continued. The Island’s historic motor vehicle ban, Fort Mackinac, and resort attractions like Grand Hotel are among its biggest draws.

Earlier this year, Mackinac Island received other global recognitions as the #1 Hottest U.S. Destination for Summer Travel by Tripadvisor and it was listed among Expedia’s Most Tourist-Friendly Cities in the U.S.
