Armand ‘Smi’ Horn

Armand Horn Armand Horn Armand “Smi” Horn, 86, of St. Ignace, formerly of Mackinac Island, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 4, 2018, at home surrounded by family.

He was born April 15, 1932 to Amos and Pansy Horn of Mackinac Island. He married Shirley “Mickey” Horn April 17, 1950 on the Island, where he worked and raised his family. Smi was employed by Mackinac Island Carriage Tours since he was a teenager (1948-present, when his illness interrupted). Smi was a lifelong Islander and promoter for local tourism and was awarded the 2016 Bill Shepler Volunteer of the Year Award from Circle Michigan.

Smi was a member of the Mackinac Island Fire Department for 33 years, serving 11 years as the Fire Chief, Constable for two years, and a member of the Mackinac Island Police Department 1965-1967 and 1970-1974. He also served on the Department of Public Works Board for three years, Cemetery Board from 1972-2018, and was a supporting member of the Veterans Committee. Smi also served the Mackinac Island Public Schools on the school board of education, Mackinac Island City Council as an Alderman and Mayor Pro-tem.

Smi is survived by six children and their families; Jim and Colleen Horn of Hessel, Mila Horn and Joe Moses of St. Ignace, Lyle and Janetta Horn of Denver, Colorado, Cub and Kitty Horn of Mackinac Island, Patricia “Squeak” Horn of St. Ignace, and Melinda and Matt Porter of Harbor Springs. He was preceded in death by Armand Miles Horn, Jr. (Army) in 1976, his wife Mickey in 2014, and a sister Ditta in 1999.

Smi is survived by 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Smi loved life, family, friends, and Mackinac Island. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling. He showed respect, love, and admiration for everyone he met. May he always be remembered for his welcoming smile.

A memorial service was held Thursday, November 8, at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. when prayers started. There was a Mass of Christian Burial Friday, November 9, at St. Anne’s Church on Mackinac Island. Visitation was from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Service began at 1 p.m. Burial followed at St. Anne’s Cemetery.
