Lakers Fall to Saints in Division 4 District Volleyball Semifinals

The Mackinac Island Lakers fell to the St. Ignace Saints 11-25, 11- 25, and 13-25 in the Division 4 district semifinals on their home court Tuesday, October 30, concluding their season.

In the opener, the Saints took a 9-0 lead on the serving of Courtney Frazier before the Lakers sliced the margin to 12-9 on the offensive strength of Ava Sehoyan, Brooke Dziobak, and Nora Bailey.

St. Ignace bounced back to outscore Mackinac Island 12-2 on the serving of Heather Lamb, Emma Feleppa, and Frazier to record the first match win.

St. Ignace held a 10-7 edge in the second match before Lamb served six points and Feleppa added five to clinch the win.

But Mackinac Island didn’t quit, and on the serving of Mabel Styburski, the Lakers cut the St. Ignace lead to 9-8 in the third match. But Olivia Champion and Kaeli Nelson combined to serve seven consecutive points to ice the semifinal victory for the Saints.

“The girls played hard and never quit,” said Mackinac Island Coach Jennifer Schrader. “This is a young team with no seniors, one junior, four sophomores, three freshman, one eighth grader, and one seventh grader. They will get better each season.”

Lakers district semifinals statistics: Brooke Dziobak, six serves, one ace, 16 passes, five attacks, one kill. Ella Cowell, 45 good sets, 20 passes, five serves. Hannah Styburski, four serves, two blocks. Ava Sehoyan, four serves. Makayla Rickley, seven good sets. Nora Bailey, two attacks, one kill, one block. Clara Chambers, one block.
