This model is a section of the submarine electric cable that Edison Sault Electric installed under the Straits of Mackinac in 1975 and 1990. American Transmission Company took ownership of the cables in 2001, and the recent spill is the first time the insulating oil that runs through the center of the cable has leaked into a Great Lake. In the background are ATC’s environmental response department manager Michelle Stokes (left) and USCG Commander Shaun Edwards, who is oversaw the oil spill response. The cable is 3.25 inches thick. 10p1.jpg
