Victor Andre Callewaert, Jr., a long-time resident of Mackinac Island passed away at age 85 on May 8, 2022, at his off-season home in Grosse Pointe Shores. At the time of his passing he was a man at peace, grateful for the many blessings of his life, and surrounded by people who loved him.
He was born on Detroit’s east side in 1936 and came to Mackinac Island in 1960 when he helped bring Ryba’s Fudge to the Island. His family portfolio has since grown beyond fudge to include the historic Island House Hotel, the Pancake House, Starbucks, the Seabiscuit, and Mary’s Bistro and Draught House.
He is survived by his five children,
Mary, Todd, Amy, Ann Parrish, and Gregg, their spouses, children, grandchildren, and numerous friends and relatives.
Mr. Callewaert was preceded in death by his wife, Rena (nee Ryba).
